What is Vedic astrology (Jyotish)?
Jyotish means "the science of light". It grew out of the Vedas, and for thousands of years families in India have turned to it when naming a child, picking a wedding date or trying to make sense of a hard year. A Vedic astrologer looks at the sky as it was the moment you were born, and reads it through three things: the twelve rashis, the nine grahas and the twenty-seven nakshatras.
If you know your sign from a Western horoscope, your Vedic sign may come as a surprise. Western astrology ties the zodiac to the seasons, while Jyotish ties it to the actual stars. Over the centuries the two have drifted about 24° apart. That gap is called the ayanamsa, and it's why many people turn out to be one sign earlier here. We use the Lahiri ayanamsa, the standard adopted by the Government of India.

The 12 Rashis (zodiac signs)
Think of the rashis as twelve rooms the planets move through, each 30° wide. Every room has its own character, shaped by its element, its quality and the planet that rules it. The most personal one is usually your Moon sign, because in Jyotish the Moon stands for the mind.

The Navagraha (nine planets)
Jyotish works with nine grahas. Seven are familiar, from the Sun out to Saturn. The other two, Rahu and Ketu, aren't physical bodies at all: they're the two points where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's, and they're behind every eclipse. Each graha looks after certain parts of life. Each also has a sign where it's at its best (exaltation) and one where it struggles (debilitation).

Gemstones of the Navagraha (Navaratna)
Each graha has its own gemstone, and together the nine are called the Navaratna. A gem is worn to strengthen its planet, letting more of that planet's light into your life. That's also why it needs care: a gem amplifies whatever its planet does in your chart, the difficult parts included.

Before you buy a gemstone
- Let an astrologer check your chart first. A gem should only strengthen a planet that works for you (usually the lords of good houses for your ascendant), never one that causes trouble.
- Blue Sapphire and Cat's Eye are the strongest of the nine. Most astrologers suggest wearing them for a few days on trial before committing.
- Buy natural, untreated stones with a lab certificate. Heated, filled or synthetic stones are not considered effective.
- Fingers, metals and days vary a little between traditions, so follow the advice of your own astrologer.
Gemstones are part of traditional practice, not a substitute for medical, financial or legal advice.
The 27 Nakshatras (lunar mansions)
Long before the twelve signs, Indian astronomers tracked the Moon against 27 groups of stars, roughly one for each night of its monthly journey. These are the nakshatras. Each one covers 13°20′, is split into four padas, and has its own ruling planet, deity and symbol. The nakshatra the Moon was in when you were born is your janma nakshatra. Families often use it to choose a baby's name, and its ruler decides which dasha your life begins with.

The 7 Chakras and the planets
The chakras come from yoga and tantra rather than from astrology itself. They're the seven energy centres of the subtle body, running from the base of the spine to the top of the head. Many teachers pair them with the grahas, starting with Saturn at the root and rising to the Sun and Moon at the brow. So when a planet is under strain in your chart, they may suggest working with the chakra that goes with it.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Vedic and Western astrology?
The biggest difference is the zodiac itself. Western astrology follows the seasons, Vedic astrology follows the stars, and today the two are about 24° apart. Jyotish also gives the Moon more weight than the Sun, uses the 27 nakshatras, and times life events with dasha periods.
What is my rashi (Moon sign)?
It's the sign the Moon was in when you were born. The Moon moves into a new sign every two and a half days or so, which is why you need your birth date, time and place to be sure. Generate your free kundli and you'll find it right at the top.
What is a nakshatra and how do I find mine?
It's one of the 27 star groups the Moon passes through, each 13°20′ wide. Yours is the one the Moon was in when you were born. It decides the dasha your life starts with, and it's traditionally used for choosing a name, picking auspicious times and checking marriage compatibility.
What is Vimshottari dasha?
It's the main way Jyotish times the chapters of a life: a 120-year cycle made up of nine planetary periods, from Ketu's 7 years to Venus's 20. Which period you start in, and how much of it is left when you're born, depends on exactly where the Moon sat in your nakshatra.
Why does my birth time matter?
Your ascendant, or lagna, moves through all twelve signs every day and spends only about two hours in each. It sets up your houses, so even a small error can shift the whole chart, and divisional charts like the Navamsa are more sensitive still. If you can, use the time on your birth certificate.
Which gemstone should I wear?
It depends on your chart, not just your sign. A gemstone strengthens its planet, so it's only recommended for a planet that is good for you, usually a lord of the 1st, 5th or 9th house from your ascendant, and never for one that harms your chart. An astrologer will look at your full kundli before suggesting one, and the stronger stones like Blue Sapphire are usually tried for a few days first.
Curious where your planets sit?
This guide covers the basics. Your own kundli shows how they come together for you: the rashi that held the Moon, the nakshatra you were born under, and the planet whose period you're living through right now.
